Bill Painter provided details of some of the Australian tunes in this archive,

Portrait 1. [1], "Hey boss! The mob want to know if you can play 'The drover's dream'? is what this one-time poddy lamb seems to be asking as Bill Painter plays his mouth organ after spreading a drought-time feed."

Portrait 2. [2], "Bill plays old dance music on his mouth organ. He learnt most of his tunes from his father, who didn't play an instrument, but used to whistle them all day."

  • John Meredith in January 1983, [10], Bill Painter, Peter Painter and John Warn play bush dance music

Bill Painter, b.1903, played mouth organ. Bill was recorded as part of the 'Crooked Corner Band', which at that time comprised himself as the senior member, John Warn playing a massive four row button accordion, and his son Peter Painter on tenor banjo. Bill learned many of his tunes from his father, who never played a musical instrument but instead whistled his tunes. Bill's grandparents were born in the Goulburn district of NSW. His great grandparents came from England. -- (adapted from) J Meredith, R Covell, P Brown, Folk Songs of Australia Vol 2, UNSW Press, 1987, p61-5
