"When John Meredith returned to Mary Byrnes's home in 1955 he met her brother-in-law, Tom, aged sixty-six, who also came from the Springside-Springhill district. He sang a number of songs and lilted several quite good dance tunes. Tom Byrnes was at one time in great demand as a country fiddler, but owing to a hand injury he could no longer play." -- J Meredith, H Anderson, Folk Songs of Australia Vol 1, UNSW Press, 1967, p56.
